Aug. 18--All Terrain Vehicle riders can get rider safety tips from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office and Triangle Cycles during ATV Safety Awareness Day on Aug. 28.
The event, which will be held in the Chatham Middle School auditorium, will begin at 1 p.m. with registration and displays, with lectures running from 1:45 to 4 p.m.
The displays will include a substance abuse prevention demonstration, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office DARE vehicle, vehicles from the county's fire and rescue departments and Centra Health's "Centra One" medical helicopter.
Two lectures, one on safety and riding techniques and the other on laws regarding ATV operation, will take place during the afternoon.
Sheriff Mike Taylor will present gift certificates and door prizes from the pool of people who complete the lectures.
A news release from Taylor said the day was planned in response to statistics that show 700 people die and 150,000 are injured in ATV accidents each year across the country -- including the deaths of four teens in Pittsylvania County in the past eight months.
"The Sheriff's Office goal of the project is to decrease the number of injuries and deaths occurring from the operation of an all terrain vehicle, through the education of parents and teens concerning important safety measures and the distribution of safety helmets," Taylor said.
The event is free, but participants must register between 1 to 1:45 p.m. the day of the event.
